This project is a 20 page newspaper with the theme of sins or virtues, each word having its own requirements and expectations. Although I briefly considered virtues to step outside of my comfort zone, I ultimately went with sins because I was excited for the ideas that I was coming up with early on. Although I had many, I chose Greek mythology because my personal knowledge and interest in the topic led me to come up with too many ideas to ignore. I decided that creating something I was passionate about was better than creating something just because it was less common. We sent this project to Newspaper Club to be printed on tabloid 55gsm paper. My process pictures and tools can be found here.
The requirements for each word are listed below...
Lust: Collage
Gluttony: Typographic/Letterform
Greed: Personal Full Color Image With Model
Sloth: Personal Duotone
Wrath: Found Object
Envy: Found Photograph With Hand-Lettering
Pride: Constructed Image
The front and back cover of my newspaper is "The Bathing Pool", painted by Hubert Robert. I chose this painting for my cover because it encapsulates the mystical feeling I was looking for and has references to Greek mythology.
My sloth photo references the myth of Narcissus, who wasted away after falling in love with his own reflection. I had originally wanted to capture my model's reflection in the original photo, but when I realized that it wasn't realistic, I edited in another photo and enlarged it to emphasize the point of the story.
My wrath story references Medusa, who was turned into a monster by Athena after having relations with Poseidon in her temple. I took this photo by lying on concrete and using Photoshop to add in snakes. I removed everything below my neck because she was beheaded.
My pride spread references the stories of Arachne, Niobe, and Icarus, who all acted against the gods, or in Icarus's case, his own father. Each object relates to one or more of these stories. I used objects around my house and from craft sections to create my spread. I was not satisfied with my original image, so I added filters and effects to make my image more visually interesting.
